Wellness: Participating in Your Fight for Recovery on
the Psychosocial Front
Harold H. Benjamin, PhD
Adapted for the Canadian edition by Alastair J. Cunningham,
PhD, PhD, CPsych
People with cancer now have a choice. They can choose
to be Patients Active, a part of the team fighting for their
recovery, or they can choose to be Patients Passive,
handing over responsibility for their recovery to their
health care team.
Thirty or 40 years ago, most cancer patients didn't
know they had any options. They were Patients
Passive and their role was well defined. It included
following their physician's instructions, accepting his
or her ministrations and, if the patient was so inclined,
praying for divine intervention. That was the only role
they thought they could play.
